The
mission of the Berkeley Program for Study Abroad is to offer
every Berkeley undergraduate the opportunity to study abroad
through the UC sponsored Education Abroad Program (EAP)
or through non-UC sponsored programs.
The
Education Abroad Program offers full-year and short-term
programs in most academic disciplines for students at the
sophomore through graduate levels. In 2002-2003, 621 Berkeley
EAP students will study at over 132 host institutions in
32 countries. Through exchange agreements, 200 students
from EAP's partner universities will attend UC Berkeley.
After
40 years of commitment to excellence, Berkeley continues
to send the largest number of students to EAP of any of
the UC campuses. The number of students is expected to increase
over the next several years in response to campus plans
for expanded enrollment. However, along with the increase
in demand to study abroad comes the increase need for financial
support.
The
single greatest obstacle to increasing access to study abroad
is a lack of financial resources. Over 70% of the UC Berkeley
students who currently participate in EAP are receiving
federal, state, or institutional financial assistance. But
it is not enough. Unfortunately, many students drop out
before the start of the program because they cannot afford
to stop working during the semester or year on EAP. Our
modest pool of scholarship funds provided by UC's Office
of the President is insufficient to cover the added cost
of study abroad in many countries, and these funds have
not been increased since the early 90's despite greater
numbers of students going on EAP.
By
making a contribution to the EAP Scholarship fund, you can
insure that this valuable educational opportunity is available
to all Berkeley students.
