Graduate Fellowships
The Institute of European Studies (IES)
is home to the leading concentration of teachers and researchers
on Europe in the western United States. As UC Berkeley's
focal point for the study of Europe, IES unites disciplines
and creates new understandings of issues related to Europe
and its constituent nations.
The
Institute houses the Center for German Studies (CGES),
France-Berkeley Fund (FBF),
Portuguese Studies Program (PSP),
and the National Resource Center for Western European Studies
(NRCWES).
Programs focused on the study of France,
Spain,
Italy,
and Finland
round out the Institute's offerings. Together, our centers
and programs have contributd to Berkeley's reputation as
one of the finest research and instructional institutions
in the world.
IES offers pre-dissertation support to graduate students
who have advanced to candidacy and are ready to write a
dissertation proposal on a European topic. Recipients of
these funds may apply them to travel expenses related to
a pre-dissertation trip to Europe. This preliminary trip
allows students to lay the groundwork for later field or
archival research. During their two- to three-month stay,
students develop a network of contacts, explore potential
host institution arrangements, and look into various European
research programs. Students emerge from these trips more
focused and confident about writing their dissertation proposals.
We
need your support to keep these programs alive. Your generous
donation will ensure that IES graduate students, both current
and future, will have all the resources they need at their
disposal.
