1. Is there a specific time frame in which students are required to declare a major in your department? If yes, when?

NO

2. Does the Undergraduate Adviser (staff) sign the Education Abroad Program academic planning form, or must a faculty adviser (professor) sign?

UNDERGRADUATE STAFF ADVISER SIGNS IT.

3. Should we advise students to make an appointment to have their academic planning form signed in your departmentIf so, do they need to bring a transcript or any other supplemental materials with them to their appointment?

THEY SHOULD COME TO CONSULT WITH THE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT AFFAIRS OFFICER (SAO), AND THEY CAN COME BY ON A DROP-IN BASIS.

4. What is the maximum amount of major credit given for courses taken during the education abroad program? Is this maximum calculated by number of courses or by units of credit? Please explain.

FOR EQUIVALENT COURSEWORK IN THE FRENCH MAJOR: STUDENTS MAY GAIN APPROVAL FOR A MAXIMUM OF 5 UPPER-DIVISION COURSES, BASED ON 3 CRITERIA:

1. LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION MUST BE FRENCH

2. COURSE CONTENT MUST BE SIMILAR IN CONTENT TO A COURSE REQUIRED FOR THE FRENCH MAJOR (I.E. A COURSE IN PHYSICS TAUGHT IN FRENCH WOULD NOT COUNT TOWARD A FRENCH MAJOR). USUALLY THIS MEANS A COURSE INVOLVING TOPICS IN FRENCH LITERATURE, FRENCH FILM, FRENCH LINGUISTICS, AND SOME ADVANCED COURSES IN FRENCH WRITING AND LANGUAGE STUDIES.

3. UNITS OF CREDIT: HOURS OF INSTRUCTION MUST BE ROUGHLY EQUIVALENT TO 4 SEMESTER UNITS. SOME COURSES WITH LESSER UNITS MAY BE COMBINED TO EQUAL ONE FULL EQUIVALENT, SOME COURSES WITH MORE UNITS MAY IN SOME CASES EQUAL MORE THAN ONE COURSE EQUIVALENT.

5. Are students in your department able to undertake senior honors theses the semester following EAP participation or are there restrictions? Please explain.

STUDENTS ARE ELIGIBLE IF THEY MEET HONORS THESIS ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS. NO RESTRICTIONS.

6. Does your department calculate EAP grades into the departmental GPA?

YES.

7. Are EAP grades counted towards departmental honors?

YES

8. If you represent a department which teaches foreign language, does your department award major credit for the courses taken during the Intensive Language Program (ILP) portion of the EAP program? If so, please explain.

ILP CAN COUNT TOWARD ONE UPPER DIVISION COURSE, USUALLY COUNTED AS EQUIVALENT TO FRENCH 102 OR 103B.

9. Does your department distribute a special information sheet for your majors which includes advice on how to articulate participation with EAP with the major?

NOT YET, BUT THAT'S A GREAT IDEA.

10. If yes, do you also provide this information on your departmental website? What is the URL?

N/A

11. Finally, most EAP students are required to officially declare their major before departure. Returning EAP students who attempt to register through Tele-BEARS from abroad need adviser codes to pre-enroll for courses. What is your departmental policy on releasing advisor codes (AC's) to EAP students?

SINCE STUDENTS ON EAP ARE IN FAIRLY REGULAR CORRESPONDENCE WITH THE SAO OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR ABROAD REGARDING SELECTION OF COURSES, THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM.

OTHER COMMENTS:

ALWAYS CHECK IN WITH THE UNDERGRADUATE ADVISER IN ANY DEPARTMENT IN WHICH YOU MAY WISH EQUIVALENT COURSE CREDIT. SAO IN FRENCH IS ALWAYS PLEASED TO SPEAK WITH PROSPECTIVE EAP FRANCE STUDENTS. BE SURE AND CHECK FOR OFFICE HOURS.
