This website is a guide for Art History students who have an interest in studying abroad. You can get more information by visiting the EAP website or by talking to an advisor in 160 Stephens.

Art History students have a great opportunity to complete some portion of their undergraduate study through the University's Education Abroad Program. Art History majors can experience foreign cultures and view renowned art works by studying abroad in a foreign country, anywhere from Japan to Italy or Australia . Because all courses taken through EAP are accepted as UC courses, with careful planning students may spend as much as a year of study in a foreign university with no loss of time in completing their degrees.

The Education Abroad Program offers a great opportunity for students to immerse themselves in a foreign culture. While studying in a program taught in English or a foreign language students will increase their understanding of Art History and have the chance to fufill major requirements. This is a great academic and personal growth opportunity which the Art History department encourages students to take advantage of for a summer, semester, or year.

Over 50 EAP universities offer coursework in Art History. Where you choose to study depends on your individual interests and priorities. Students that would like to increase their fluency while completing art history coursework should consider EAP immersion programs in which students take regular university courses in the language of the country. Other programs also offer opportunities for students to take courses in English or to begin studying a language while completing major coursework as well. Furthermore, you can choose your destination based on specific interests that you may have within your major. For students that would like to focus on Asian art history there are EAP programs in Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, and the Phillipines. If art ranging from Medieval to Modern is your interest there are programs in Italy, Spain, France, and the UK and Ireland.

The Coursefinder database includes descriptions of all courses taken by UC students while on EAP programs. It does not however include all courses offered by the host university.

The Program Wizard helps you to find programs that may be interesting to you by allowing you to search programs based on personal preferences such as language, length of time, country, and major.

All courses taken through EAP are treated as UC units and will be transferred back for credit. However, whether or not these units count toward your major requirements is up to your department.

The Art History department gives credit for up to seven courses taken abroad, no more than three of which can be upper division. However, in order to receive major credit the courses must be comparable in breadth with those at Berkeley. The final decision for credit is made upon your return by a major adviser. Consult with your adviser ahead of time to get more information about courses and transferring units back.

Study on EAP can be comparable to the cost of study at UC and in some cases less. EAP participants pay UC fees and continue to receive UC financial aid while abroad. There are also grants and scholarships available for EAP students. Please see the study abroad advisers for more information.
