This website is a guide for Public Health students who have an interest in studying abroad. You can get more information by visiting the EAP website or by talking to an advisor in 160 Stephens.

Public Health students can study all over the world through the University of California 's Education Abroad Program (EAP), in most cases without delaying graduation or adding financial burden.

The Public Health department encourages its students to take advantage of the opportunity to complete some portion of their undergraduate study through the University's Education Abroad Program. As the field of Public Health becomes increasingly international, it is more important than ever that students gain experience throughout the world like that which is available on EAP. Because all courses taken through EAP are accepted as UC courses, with careful planning students may spend as much as a year of study in a foreign university with no loss of time in completing their degrees.

Studying abroad provides a great opportunity for Public Health majors to understand their course work in a broader context. By exposing yourself to a variety of different cultures and experiences you have a better framework with which to interpret your studies. You will also gain new and different perspectives in and out of the classroom.

Study abroad programs are available for students of many class levels. Your choice of when to study abroad depends on your personal progress in the major and the type of coursework that you hope to study while abroad. To determine what is the best time period for you consult with your major advisor at the Public Health office in 140 Warren Hall.

Where you choose to study depends on your individual interests and priorities. Students that would like to increase their fluency while completing Public Health coursework should consider EAP immersion programs in which students take regular university courses in the language of the country. Other programs also offer opportunities for students to take courses in English or to begin studying a foreign language. You may also choose your destination based on whether you prioritize classroom opportunities or would like to focus more on involvement in the community or local health organizations.

If you are interested in finding a variety of applicable courses you may consider the following destinations which have been identified as being strong in sciences and health:

•  Australia

•  New Zealand

•  Chile : Pontifical Catholic University of Chile , Santiago

•  Ghana : University of Ghana , Legon

•  United Kingdom/Ireland

Furthermore, while many of the EAP destinations offer opportunities for students to get involved in the surrounding communities through internships and volunteer work there are several sites which have more structured internship programs. The following EAP programs are those that would be especially well suited to accommodating Public Health related coursework:

•  Costa Rica

•  Ghana

•  Mexico

The Coursefinder database includes descriptions of all courses taken by UC students while on EAP programs. It does not however include all courses offered by the host university.

The Program Wizard helps you to find programs that may be interesting to you by allowing you to search programs based on personal preferences such as language, length of time, country, and major.

All courses taken through EAP are treated as UC units and will be transferred back for credit. However, whether or not these units count toward your major requirements is up to your department.

As a Public Health major you can get credit for your major elective courses through your studies abroad. These courses should be comparable to those offered in your department at Berkeley. While courses are not approved before your departure, you should consult with your major adviser to get more information about course guidelines and credits. Upon your return, keep your course materials available to assist the undergraduate management committee who will review the courses and accept them for major credit on a case by case basis.

Study on EAP can be comparable to the cost of study at UC and in some cases less. EAP participants pay UC fees and continue to receive UC financial aid while abroad. There are also grants and scholarships available for EAP students. Please see the study abroad advisers for more information.
