Islam and the Changing Identity of Europe: Culture, Politics and Citizenship in an Era of Globalization

October 16-17, 1998
The Seaborg Room, The Faculty Club

Europe has been undergoing profound changes in our contemporary era of globalization, due in part to new Muslim populations which have sprung up in the United Kingdom, France, Germany and elsewhere. This Symposium will explore how some of Europe's Muslims view themselves, how they are viewed by non-Muslims, and how debates about identity, nationhood and citizenship are forcing all Europeans to rethink their collective identities as global citizens, as Europeans and as citizens of specific countries.
