The
Library at the University of California at Berkeley
The
work of CMES is greatly facilitated by the extensive library resources
of the Berkeley campus in Middle Eastern subjects. The Middle East Collection
of UC Berkeley's Main Library is divided between Middle Eastern Collection
and Judaica/Hebraica.
Berkeley's
extensive Middle Eastern Collection comprises more than 150,000 volumes
in Arabic, Persian, Turkish, and other less commonly collected languages
such as Kurdish, Azeri, and the Berber languages. The collection also
includes about 35,000 Middle Eastern related publications in English,
French, German, Russian, Dutch, Italian, among other languages. A recent
endowment from the Assyrian community has provided funds for new purchases
in that language. The collection also includes more than 500 current periodicals
and about 1,000 sets of archived periodicals . The collection is particularly
strong in the areas of literature, religious studies, society, ancient
studies, politics and government; and it contains an especially large
group of linguistics source materials. Persian-language materials in all
disciplines published outside of Iran are also very numerous. The Bancroft
Library holds quite a few rare manuscripts, some dating to the 15th century
and a special selection of maps.

Middle
Eastern | American: An Interactive Video Tapestry
This
project focuses on video-taped interviews of young Americans, ages 16
- 24 across a spectrum of religious, ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
Responses were then assembled within an interactive framework. By allowing
the simple juxtaposition of divergent, first person perspectives, each
persons interview stands alone, and yet also contributes to the
larger dialogue surrounding the impact of 9/11. This project was partially
funded by a grant from the Al-Falah Program.
