The newly-formed Centre for Human Rights and Development, New Delhi,seeks
to promote research and advocacy on issues related to marginalised
communities in India so as to promote the empowerment of these
communities. To begin with, we have launched a web-magazine,which you can
access on www.socialjusticeindia.org. [Ed. note, the site is
new and still under construction. FFC]
We are planning to publish a volume dealing with issues relating to
Muslims in contemporary India. Given the relative paucity of empirically
grounded research on Muslims in the country, we see an urgent need for
this sort of literature to be promoted.
We invite you to consider sending us an article for the proposed book. The
article should be of between 6000 and 7000 words, including footnotes.
Articles should deal with one of the following issues:
- Muslim Education: Issues related to Muslim representation in different
levels of education; problems in promoting education among Muslims;
evaluation and critique of state policies relating to Muslim education;
role of NGOs in promoting Muslim education; functioning of Muslim
educational institutions; critique of textbooks from the point of
view of portrayal of Muslims and Islam.
- Muslim Economic conditions: Issues related to Muslim ownership
of assets and participation in the labour force; problems of Muslim
artisans and working classes; role of NGOs in promoting Muslim educational
advancement; impact of new economic policies and 'globalisation' on
Muslim artisans; state policies on Muslim economic advancement
- Muslim Political Participation: Muslim representation in various
political parties; attitudes of political parties towards Muslim issues;
ability or otherwise of Muslim political leaders to represent Muslim
issues; problems in advocating Muslim issues and concerns in the broader
political arena.
- Muslim Representation in Government Services: state-wise analyses;
the extent to which Muslim OBCs have benefitted from OBC reservations.
We plan to approach a 'mainstream', preferably Delhi-based, publisher
to publish the book. Do consider sending us the manuscript within two
months (by late June 2006). We would prefer empirically-based articles
written from a prescriptive perspective, suggesting concrete and practical
intervention measures.
