September 15, 2006
Berkeley Art Museum Theater

Program Schedule

The Center for South Asia Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, in collaboration with Australian National University, will host a colloquium focusing on the challenges India must overcome if it is to continue to forge a path that is strong both internally and externally. What makes India unique among new nations is the combination of democracy and economic strength. Without a thriving democracy, for example, India's economy may not realize it fullest potential, as some social groups will continue to lag behind.

The one-day colloquium, "Democratic India: Social and Political Challenges in the 21st Century" to be held on September 15, 2006, will address such questions as: What is the state of India's democracy even as India is hailed as an emerging economic giant? How well are its democratic institutions keeping pace with the many changes that have swept across India in the last decade? How do we make sense of new electoral patterns in the wake of these changes? This colloquium will take place in the theater of the Berkeley Art Museum, where the exhibit "Edge of Desire: Recent Art in India", curated by Chaitanya Sambrani of Australian National University, will be on display. This exhibit features the work of some of India's greatest contemporary artists and addresses contemporary social, political, and economic issues that resonate with the themes of the colloquium.

In collaboration with the Research School of Humanities and the Research School of Pacific & Asian Studies, Australian National University.
Further assistance has been provided by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and the Berkeley Art Museum.
