Please take note that these fellowships are available to
graduate students at the
University of California at Berkeley. If you are an incoming
student in a program at Berkeley and specified on your application that
you would like to be considered for fellowships, then you will be considered for FLAS.
Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships are available only to US citizens or permanent residents.
If you are a continuing student, you may use the forms available
from the Graduate Fellowships Office (318 Sproul Hall) to apply for
the coming summer or academic year. The decisions about FLAS awards
are made by a faculty committee, not the staff of the Center for South
Asia Studies. CSAS cannot inform you about FLAS awards - only the
Graduate Division can notify students of awards. The funds for these
fellowships are provided by the US Department of Education's Title
VI grant that funds the Center for South Asia Studies.
The deadline for both academic year and summer FLAS fellowship support
is Monday, January 28, 2008. The eligible languages
for South Asia are Bengali, Hindi, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil, and Urdu.
Applicants for summer FLAS awards are strongly encouraged to take
advantage of the summer intensive language programs offered at various US universities during the summer.
UC Berkeley's Summer Session offers a first-year Hindi course during the summer. The
South Asia Summer Language Institute (SASLI) at the University
of Wisconsin will offer a number of languages at the beginning and intermediate levels,
including:
- Elementary level offerings:
Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi, Nepali, Tamil, Telugu, Tibetan, and Urdu.
- Second year level offerings:
Hindi, Nepali, Tibetan, and Urdu.
Academic year programs at UC Berkeley include Hindi, Urdu, Tamil
and Sanskrit, at all levels. With special permission, Bengali and
Punjabi may be available.
