Intermediate Hindi Reader
This reader provides interesting and well-organized teaching materials for intermediate-level Hindi classes. It consists of a graded series of 21 readings that enable students to develop their language skills; in addition, it encourages literary appreciation and cultural understanding. The subject matter of the readings ranges from classical myths to modern social life and provides insights into the varied cultural worlds of Hindi speakers. The author has attempted to include as wide a variety of literary styles as possible Each reading is followed by a detailed serial glossary. Words that are to be actively acquired are marked with an asterisk (*). Students are expected to memorize these words; therefore, they are not glossed again in subsequent readings. Students using this reader should acquire approximately one thousand words of new active vocabulary. The reader provides a list of all the active vocabulary words arranged alphabetically with grammatical designations at the end of the book. A set of accompanying audiotapes or CDs is also available for purchase through the Berkeley Language Center.
