SUMMER STUDY ABROAD in INDIA
Hindi Language and Indian Culture (6 credit hours)
New Delhi, India
Approximate dates: May 22 through June 30, 2006
Sponsored by NC State University
Prof. Afroz Taj (NCSU Dept. of Foreign Languages and Literatures)
will take a group of up to twenty students to India for six weeks of
academic study.
The program is based in New Delhi, with excursions to Uttranchal
(Himalayan Foothills), Western Uttar Pradesh (Agra, Aligarh,
Mathura), and Rajasthan (Jaipur).
This program is open to undergraduates, graduates, and continuing
education students.
You do not have to be an NC State student to apply.
Students will enroll in two 3-credit courses:
A. Indian Literature and Culture
FL 495: Intro to Indian Literature and Culture (3 credits) (taught in
English), including excursions and trips to museums, concerts, plays,
etc.
B: Hindi Language at the appropriate level
FLN 101: Elementary Hindi (3 credits) (no previous study of Hindi
required)
OR FLN 201: Intermediate Hindi (3 credits)
OR FLN 301: Advanced Hindi (3 credits)
All courses taught by Prof. Taj, supplemented by guest lectures.
Housing: While in New Delhi, students live in University guest
houses. While on excursions, students live in hotels, guest houses,
or dharmsalas. A homestay component is new in this year's program.
Cost: $2,400 includes all in-country expenses: tuition, room and
board, fees, insurance, transportation within India, etc. This cost
does not include the airfare (expected $1,300). We will arrange a
group flight but students will pay their airfare individually
directly to the travel agent.
