International Faculty Program

MISSION
In keeping with its commitment to develop and offer a Liberal Arts education in Bangladesh, where it is a very new and alien concept, the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) intends to actively promote international exchange conducive to this purpose. ULAB seeks links with international Universities or other institutions of research and learning for the following purposes:

  • Exchange of faculty or students for specified durations and purposes, including the development and teaching of a Liberal Arts program;
  • Exchange for the development of other programs, including professional or technical ones (Business, Law, Computer Science, Media Studies, etc.);
  • Mutual assistance on academic research; and/or extension of other forms of mutual institutional supports;
  • Facilities for students to transfer to a linked University and complete and receive their degrees from the partner institution.

OPPORTUNITIES - FALL 2005  SPRING 2007:
The above statements describe the broad and long-term ambitions of ULAB in the sphere of international exchange. Aspects of this broad proposal that ULAB is keen to establish over the next two academic years include the following:

  • Securing American-trained instructors in pertinent fields for durations of at least one semester, preferably a full year;
  • Securing academic or research tour facilities from the partner institution for faculty for short durations;
  • Securing access to shared internet-based or other research facilities;
  • Providing facilities and supports to any faculty from the partner institution who wants to carry out research in Bangladesh;
  • Providing internet-based research facilities or information through partnering of suitable faculties or researchers.

FACULTY PROFILES AND FACILITIES
Following is a description of the areas of knowledge in which ULAB seeks Visiting Faculty, and the type of facilities that ULAB can provide for different levels of faculties:

A. Profiles and Facilities:
ULAB is eager to receive Visiting Faculties with expertise in the following areas:

  • Development of a Liberal Arts curriculum, and the teaching of relevant subjects, especially history, literatures, and social sciences with a focus on Western cultures, South Asia, Islamic world or the developing world;
  • Teaching of English as a Second Language;
  • Computer Science and Engineering;
  • Media Studies and Journalism;
  • Business Studies;
  • Development Economics or Studies;
  • Environmental Studies.
ULAB either has established programs in these fields, or is keen to do so in the next two years.

B. Expectations of and Facilities for Visiting Faculty:
During their tenure, Visiting Faculty will usually be expected to perform as a full-time faculty, which usually means carrying a teaching load of three courses per semester, being available for student advising and reasonable participation in University life.
In case of faculties who come to bear special administrative responsibilities, including special dedication to curricular development or research, the teaching load may be reduced by negotiations in advance.

Professor/Deans:
For Visiting Faculties of this rank or level, ULAB prefers persons with a degree of administrative ability and experience, especially in the following areas (no one person is expected to have experience in all areas):

  • Developing new programs, and faculty-training;
  • Curricular development, and directing research;
  • Fund-raising, including research grants;
  • Building relationships with other institutions or programs.
Qualification: Holding same or similar rank in the home institution.
Provisions: ULAB will provide fully-furnished housing in expatriate neighborhood for duration of stay (including utilities, phone, computer with broad-band Internet, washer/dryer etc.); full-time transportation with driver; and a monthly stipend equal to the highest local standards for persons of similar rank and status (approximately USD2000/mo.).

Associate Professors:
Expectations same as above.
Qualification and provisions similarly determined, except that housing may be shared and transportation may belong to a pool.

Assistant Professors/Lecturers:
Preferably with experience in:

  • Curricular development;
  • Grant-writing;
  • Conducting serious research.
Qualifications: Same rank at home institution; persons with a Master's completed may be considered at the level of Lecturers.
Provisions: Shared housing provided as above. Stipend determined similarly as above.

Research or Teaching Assistants:
Qualifications: Master's preferred; but qualified graduates also welcome.
Provisions: Shared housing provided as above. Stipend according to qualification level (degree; teaching and/or other relevant experience).

C. Positions  Availability and Procedures:
All the higher positions are open for Spring 2006 - Spring 2007. However, no assistant positions are available at the moment for Fall 2005 Spring 2006. One assistant position may open up for Spring 2006; we are happy to inform an interested institution of such an opportunity.

  1. While we emphasize this American training or experience, it is not necessary for a Visiting Faculty to be an American citizen, nor to have necessarily received such experience in America alone. ULAB is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, nationality, gender or other identitarian grounds.
  2. Typically, ULAB needs notification of interest from a Visiting Faculty at least four months ahead of the beginning of the intended semester, in order to process government permissions and visas, and also to ensure provision of all facilities. In special cases, positions being available we can try to accommodate an interested faculty on a shorter notice.
  3. ULAB is possibly the only local university that runs on an American-styled semester schedule, but our semesters differ slightly from the typical American calendar. Our Fall semester runs usually from October to mid-February and Spring from late February to June. We have a shorter summer session, but Visiting Faculty are not usually eligible for that term.
  4. Faculty will be responsible for their own travel expenses to and from Bangladesh, visa fees, immunizations, medical fees, international phone charges, non-university-related transportation, etc. It is highly recommended that faculty have the appropriate insurance coverage, either through their regular insurer or by purchasing supplemental travel insurance.

CONCLUSION
The kind of positions and facilities that ULAB offers for Visiting Faculties are, like the Liberal Arts curriculum we promote, quite unique in Bangladesh. We believe it can be an excellent opportunity for any faculty who seeks a different or exciting experience on sabbatical, or for whose research interests Bangladesh can be a fertile field.
